Syracuse Pulls Away from Stony Brook, Clinches Quarterfinal Berth

It wasn’t until a two-minute stretch in the second quarter that Syracuse could breathe … a little.

Because even then, we all know what happens when Syracuse plays Stony Brook. Every game seems to go down to the very end.

So that four-goal run spanning 2:18 in the last third of the second quarter was massive in giving the Orange just a little bit of room. Four scorers — Emma Tyrrell, Gracie Britton, Maddie Baxter and Joely Caramelli — turned a two-goal lead into a six-goal lead, and Syracuse kept its distance from there in a 15-10 win on Sunday in Syracuse.

In avenging an early-March overtime loss to the Seawolves, third-seeded Syracuse punched its ticket to the NCAA quarterfinals on Thursday against sixth-seeded Yale, which dispatched Johns Hopkins 9-7.

Tyrrell led the Orange with five goals and one assist, and Olivia Adamson produced three goals and three assists. Kate Mashewske controlled 20 draws, including 15 in the first half alone.

Kailyn Hart led the Seawolves with three goals and two assists. Ellie Masera, a Tewaaraton Award finalist, had two goals and one assist in her final collegiate game.

Syracuse never trailed in the game, but Stony Brook constantly threatened in the game’s first 25 minutes. Hart’s 72nd goal of the season cut it to 3-2, then after the Orange notched three straight, Masera scored both of her goals in a two-plus-minute span to bring it back to 6-4.

Hart assisted Charlotte Verhulst to make it 7-5 with 6:40 left in the first half before Syracuse went on the four-goal run from which Stony Brook couldn’t recover.
